The History of Ceramic Plates
Did You Know: People Have Made Ceramic Plates for Such a Long Time. Archaeologists have actually found ceramic plate set dating back over 6,000 years. These plates date back to 4,000 BCE. In the distant past, humans fashioned simple plates from clay that were functional for eating but not very beautiful to behold. They were relatively boring but fulfilled their role.
But soon enough, people started putting their own spins on their plates. These were then decorated with colorful designs and patterns. Some cultures, including the ancient Greeks, painted beautiful pictures and scenes on their plates. Now, fast forward to today, and there are ceramic plates in all shapes, sizes, and designs. The plates can be modern and minimalist, with simplistic lines and basic styles; they can also be traditional and elaborate, with complex patterns and vibrant colors.
Making Ceramic Plates
It is not simple to create a ceramic plate. To make a plate that looks nice; it takes a lot of skills, persistence, and a steady hand. I am very proud of how we prepare our plates at Fenn. All white ceramic plates are individually hand made, our expert craftspeople meticulously ensure that each plate is perfect.
Clay must be prepared before a plate can be made. We create the smooth and even texture by mixing some special clay with water at the beginning. This is very important as it allows us to work the clay with ease. The first step is preparing the clay, turning it into a ball and placing it on a pottery wheel. The potters wheel is a specific tool that assists the craftsman in molding the clay into a plate.
Combining Old and New Styles
We believe that marrying old crafting methods and new ways can produce beautiful and functional plates. That’s why we use both old fashioned and even hand-crafting methods to shape our plates, while we also use modern designs and color palettes to make our plates palatable to the eye and unlike any other.
So, maybe we use a traditional technique called slip casting to form the shape of the plate. In other words, we use rubber molds to pour the liquid clay to get the shape we want. Then, we can add bold and colorful designs to the plate using a modern printing technique. Using a mix of classic and modern techniques, we develop plates that are timeless in nature, but fit for everyone, thus making them unique.
Process of Making Ceramic Plates by Hand
So, let us look at the detailed process of handcrafting ceramic plates. The clay is centered on the pottery wheel first. That is, the artisan places the ball of clay directly center on the turning wheel. Then they spin it round until it is even and symmetrical.
Then, using their hands, the artisan shapes the clay into the format desired for the plate. This step requires a great deal of skill and experience, as the craftsman has to apply precisely the right amount of pressure to the clay. They also have to fashion it and smooth it with their hands to make sure that plate looks good.
After shaping the plate, it’s allowed to dry for hours. Since the clay must be firm before moving on to the next step, this is really a very important step in using polymer clay. Once it has started to dry out a little, the craftsman uses a specific tool known as a fettling knife to trim excess clay from the plate and sharpen the edges, so they are clean and nice.
The final step is firing the plate in a kiln at extremely high temperatures. This is an important step in the process because it not only hardens the clay, it also gives the plate its final shape and texture. Here at Fenn, we are very careful to ensure that every plate is fired at the appropriate temperature and for an appropriate period of time. We even have to make sure that the plate is robust and reliable enough for all users of the system.
The Beauty of Handmade Plates
The beautiful part about handmade ceramic plates is that no two are exactly the same. Each plate will never exactly look like the other, even when made by the same process. This is because every artisan leaves his unusual touch and his personal skill in crating that platter.
We lean into the handmade nature of ceramic plates by Fenn. There is magic in the small imperfections and variations that are inherent in handmade products and is why we love them. Our plates are not only unique, but also provide a glimpse into the life of the person who created it.
